August 20, 2012. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held August 14 to celebrate the opening of the Village de Jardin community in New Orleans East.

Managed by Latter & Blum Property Management, the senior living development was built on the site of the former Gaslight apartment complex. That community had deteriorated even prior to Katrina flooding and was not rebuilt.

The 224-unit Village De Jardin is designed for adults aged 55 and over. The community features two five-story towers as well as town house units on the approximately 11 acre site.

The project was developed by the Louisiana Housing Corporation with funds provided by FEMA after Hurricane Katrina.  Officials with the LHC estimated the project cost at $40 million.

A unique addition to the community is a non-urgent care health clinic specifically for geriatric patients. Staffed by the LSU Health Sciences Center, it will serve seniors both inside and outside the community.
